New Album Unveils Julia Weissberg Rimsky-Korsakov’s Hidden Legacy, Silenced by Antisemitism and WWII

Acclaimed soprano Sarah Moulton Faux and internationally recognized pianist-composer Konstantin Soukhovetski are proud to announce the upcoming release of YULIYA, a groundbreaking album from Azica Records featuring the newly rediscovered art songs of Julia Weissberg Rimsky-Korsakov (1878–1942), a gifted composer tragically silenced by antisemitism and the turmoil of World War II.

Julia Weissberg Rimsky-Korsakov, daughter-in-law of renowned composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, was once a rising star in the late-Romantic classical music scene. Her promising career was abruptly halted by devastating historical circumstances, including the Nazi siege of Leningrad. Much like the celebrated African-American composer Florence Price, whose works were similarly neglected due to racial prejudice, Julia’s beautiful and poignant music remained unheard and forgotten for decades—until now.

This extraordinary musical revival has been passionately brought to life by Moulton Faux and Soukhovetski, both known for their advocacy of overlooked and forgotten music. They collaborated closely to carefully select and interpret the emotional depth and intricate beauty of Julia’s compositions.

Produced and engineered by seven-time GRAMMY® winner Judith Sherman, YULIYA includes fifteen meticulously curated art songs, such as the expressive “Rautendelein” song cycle. Additionally, the album features settings of texts by other notable women artists of Julia’s era, including Russian poet Sophia Parnok and Indian poet and activist Sarojini Naidu.
